چکیده

The manufacturing of single crystals of multi-component materials with uniform material properties is frequently hampered by the presence of morphological instabilities during the solidification. In this paper we extend into the nonlinear regime our previous work on the influence of shear flows on the linear stability of the solid/liquid interface during the directional solidification of binary alloys. The flows are generated by unidirectional or nonplanar harmonic oscillations of the crystal parallel to the mean interface position, and oscillations with physically realizable amplitudes and frequencies are found to be useful for stabilization purposes. A strongly nonlinear equation which governs the evolution of the interface in the limit of high surface energy, a weak flow and thermodynamic equilibrium is derived, and a weakly nonlinear analysis of this equation is performed. For the unidirectional case, it is found that oscillations with sufficiently large amplitude will change the initial bifurcation from superto subcritical. For the nonplanar case, it is found that subcritical instability of roll, square and hexagonal cells is favored as the amplitude of the flow is increased. Thus, some of the stabilization due to the flow may be lost at finite amplitude, but substantial stabilization can be retained. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~96!01509-7#

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

Laminar channel flow over long and moderate waves

Laminar Newtonian flow through a 2-dimensional channel with one sinusoidal wall is studied for wavelengths comparable to, or much larger than, the channel height. In the long wave limit which is solved analytically, the pressure is in phase with the wave slope and the shear stress is in phase with the wave height. As the wavelength is reduced, the shear stress maximum moves upstream of the peak...

Modeling and analysis of a three-component piezoelectric force sensor

This paper presents a mathematical model for the vibration analysis of a three-component piezoelectric force sensor. The cubic theory of weakly nonlinear electroelasticity is applied to the model for describing the electromechanical coupling effect in the piezoelectric sensing elements which operate in thickness-shear and thickness-stretch vibration modes. Hamilton's principle is used to derive...

Fluid description of collisional current filamentation instability of a weakly ionized plasma in the presence of magnetic field

In this paper, the collisional filamentation instability of an electron beam-weakly magnetized and ionized plasma has been investigated in the presence of background plasma, using the fluid description. By describing the equilibrium configuration in the presence of binary collision terms between charged and neutral particles and using the local approximation method, the dispersion relation (DR)...

Long-Wave Instability in Marginally Stable Shear Flows

The reductive perturbation theories used by physicists typically fall into two classes: adiabatic elimination of strongly damped variables in dissipative systems, or averaging over fast oscillations in finite dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Our interest here is a third class which in a peculiar way combines aspects of both methods; this is the development of reduced descriptions for instabilit...
